Merdeka Weekend Exploring Taman Bahagia, Kota Damansara & Section 17,PJ

[ Complete & updated list of dog friendly cafes (>30) and other places we've been to : here ]

Malaysia's 58th Independence Day began with us bringing Bella out to accompany us for lunch at Gee & Geek near the Taman Bahagia station. It was our second attempt at going there, the first a failure as we were there too early.

Gee and Geek, Taman Bahagia

Atmosphere :  Simple decor, but roomy enough for Bella to wander between Keong and I as her head popped up for the food. Unfortunately it was a blistering hot day so our next visit would be during a cloudy day / night.

Coffee & Drinks   :  Coffee = Decent. Green Goblin (guava & mint) was refreshing.

Food   :  Pulled pork burger and Seafood Aglio Olio were a Hit! Would definitely come back for the food portions & overall quality.

Waiting time    : Decent.

Price   :  Food RM20-35. Decent, we felt, for the portion.

Staff & Overall Receptiveness to Bella   :   Good! Waiter gave Bella an ear rub (or several) and none were afraid of her.

Overall   :  Definitely a place to come back to.

Merdeka Day itself saw us bringing Bella out to the Bandar Utama dog park. Due to the long weekend and late-ish hour, the park didn't have the usual weekend crowd but a couple of Poodles and a lovable bulldog were exploring away.

An old friend of Bella's, Ewok (another Rottie), dropped by to say hullo. Bella and Ewok took some time to get to know each other again but Ewok soon lost interest. Ewok was much too excited to be out and eager to play with all the small dogs running around.

Bella's Bum... my footrest

Yum, something on my nose?

After awhile, tummies started growling and we decided to go for our usual brunch trip with Bella and explore a new cafe. I'd been wanting to try out W Cafe and their delicious sounding siew yok in Kota Damansara and Keong was happy to accede.

Unfortunately, after Wazing it all the way to the Strand, we realised that W Cafe was Closed! It closes on Mondays and although it was a public holiday, it was still a Monday!

Luckily we saw Fifth Palate in the same building. After a quick call to them to confirm that they were dog friendly, we eagerly parked the car and went down to the restaurant. But alas! fate was not to be again as all the outdoor seating were taken and diners busy tucking in.

So round & round Kota Damansara we went, hoping to glimpse a cafe that could potentially be dog friendly. By chance, we stumbled across a coffee cafe that was open with outdoor seating, The Brew Houze

Down we went again to enquire if they allowed dogs... and yes! They were ok, provided it was outside.

What was our verdict?

Smart arrangement for outdoor seating

Bella's mandatory pose at the cafe

Atmosphere: warm & friendly, hipster-ish with Instagram worthy shots possible. Jazzy music was played enhancing the mood.

Coffee : Decent coffee. No soy milk though (I'm lactose intolerant so can't take milk).

Waiting time : Unfortunately, it took 45 minutes for our food to arrive. The barista was very nice and explained that a kitchen staff took leave suddenly... but as they only had 2 other tables occupied, we found the excuse wanting.

Food  : Keong ordered the fried chicken and I had the Chef's signature stuffed grilled chicken. When the dishes came, our hearts dropped at the measly serving of fries. Both the chickens were dry.

Price   :  Food RM20-35. A bit pricey for us for the portions.

Um, more fries please?

Staff & Overall Receptiveness to Bella   :   Okay.

Overall  : I would rate it a 2 out of 5. Go for the atmosphere, music and decent coffee. But hungry folks may want to give it a miss.

A Sweet Ending

Keong and I still felt the need for more food after the Brew Houze so we went back to our favourite hangout, Strangers @ 47 for something sweet.

Merdeka Special : Musang King crepe with crumble & cempedak pieces, topped with ice cream. Soooo good, wish it was a permanent item on the menu...

Cendolier Cake... Despite Keong's misgivings, the creamy Gula Melaka topping and overall melt in your mouth, ohmigosh this is soooo good demands a second serving

Strangers is our default go to dog friendly cafe so I won't rate it. Suffice to say, food good, coffee good, staff good, all good!
